How do AVs need to interact with the people in shared rural and remote environments?

Beyond technical challenges, the uptake of AVs operating in close proximity to other road users depends heavily on public acceptance. Public acceptance is linked to people understanding how AVs make decisions. Building on the CIs’ discovery research in shared-space interactions (DP220102019), this project investigates when, how and what information AVs operating in rural and remote environments should communicate to other road users.

The project develops and tests potential solutions for UC2-3, translating theory into practical applications. These solutions form input for Project 2.4 for situations where information needs to be communicated through physical interventions. End-users can draw on the findings to implement the Safe System approach and promote safe behaviour around automated rural applications.
