How to provide accurate, robust and continual localisation and navigation services in rural and remote regions?

This project will deliver substantial innovations required to adapt key localization-related sensing systems andnavigation to be applicable in remote regions:

1. Novel SLAM-type approaches and GPS-based techniques

2. User-centred community-led high-definition maps creation and maintenance (in collaboration with Project 2.3)

3. Critical reactive navigation managing rural specific behaviour (e.g. single lane dual direction roads, drivable areas, road users such as road trains, wildlife).

Key innovation includes leveraging the unique characteristics of what is, and importantly, what is not required for a fit-for-purpose AV localisation and navigation in rural and remote regions. This will lower costs, create commerciallyfeasible solutions, and facilitate use cases UC3 and UC2.
