Addresses the needs of:

How to sense and understand the environment at ranges that are compatible with the dynamics of the vehicles? How to identify the degraded performance of a sensor and perception system under harsh conditions?

Rural and remote regions pose challenges to sensing: roads and drivable areas are not well defined, detection may be required at longer ranges than in urban applications, identification and tracking of wildlife is complex, sensors’ performance may degrade quickly due to harsh conditions. This project:

1. Explores the specific system requirements for operation on the open road in harsh conditions

2. Gains insights about the limitations of existing algorithms and systems designed for urban environments in those conditions

3. Explains performances of existing systems

4. Explores innovative ML/data fusion approaches to overcome the lack of performance

5. Investigates with project 2.1 if the perceived risk from the sensing aligns with driver attention to improve the situation awareness.
