AVR3’s research aims to grow national capability in vehicle automation, tailored specifically to public roads in rural, regional & remote Australia.

The AVR3’s activities will innovate a simulation framework where the physical & virtual environments will be tightly linked together (digital twins, hardware in the loop, driver in the loop), allowing seamless transitions.

Research teams are provided industry focused, end-user-centric use cases to identify domain/discipline-specific research challenges while creating a broader understanding & integration of the challenges between suppliers, regulators & end-users.

Technological Challenges

Focusing on the engineering and technical aspects of automated vehicles, this program addresses key challenges such as localisation, navigation, sensing, communication, and digital twin technology. The goal is to create robust AV solutions capable of operating reliably in rural and remote environments.

Interaction Challenges

Exploring the human factors and societal interactions of AVs, this program investigates driver/operator engagement, interactions with other road users, community acceptance, and infrastructure adaptation. It aims to ensure that AVs integrate seamlessly and safely into rural communities.

Policy Challenges

Addressing the policy, safety assurance, workforce development, and business models essential for the successful deployment of AVs, this program focuses on developing a robust regulatory framework and building a compelling economic case. The aim is to support the adoption and scalability of automated transport solutions, ensuring their long-term viability.
